ScottMadden to Sponsor and Present at Transmission Executive Forum West

September 25, 2014

Impacts of Distributed Resources, Alternative Technologies, and the Evolving Generation Portfolio on Transmission Operations

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, is proud to join leading industry players as a sponsor and presenter at Infocast’s 6th Annual Transmission Summit West being held September 30–October 2, 2014, at the Westgate Hotel in San Diego, California. The three-day program will feature two distinct events: The Transmission Executive Forum West, being held September 30, 2014, and The Transmission Summit West 2014, being held October 1–2, 2014.

During the Transmission Executive Forum West, Cristin Lyons, partner and transmission, distribution, and Smart Grid practice leader at ScottMadden, will serve as the Forum chair and moderate the panel, “Update on the Western Interconnection Energy Imbalance Market.” The California ISO is working with PacifiCorp to implement an Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) in 2014, and NV Energy has announced its intention to enter the EIM in 2015. The EIM is envisioned to provide benefits to customers through the economic leveraging of greater volumes of load and generation, more efficient use of the transmission system, and improvements to the integration of renewable resources. Entities throughout the west are exploring other options to obtain these goals for their customers as well. This session will provide an up-to-date overview and status of these various efforts.

Chris Vlahoplus, partner and clean tech & sustainability practice leader at ScottMadden, will present the case study, “How Renewables and Distributed Resource Penetration Impacted Transmission in Germany.” Germany has seen the level of utility-scale and distributed renewables rise to unprecedented levels. This presentation will examine how grid operations have changed and how transmission flows and utility revenues have been affected.

Additionally, Kevin Hernandez, senior associate at ScottMadden, will facilitate the panel, “Dealing with the Impacts of Coal and Other Plant Shutdowns in the West.” This session will explore how changes and shifts in how electricity is produced and delivered to customers will have important implications for utilities and transmission system operators—how will it impact the amount and location of transmission needed, the rates that can be charged for it, and its relative value in a utility’s portfolio assets.
