Dealing with Emerging Utility Challenges by Improving Rate Design and Customer Communications
ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, is pleased to join Christensen Associates Energy Consulting as a sponsor and presenter at EUCI’s 13th Annual Rate Design Conference being held September 28–29 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. This event, which is focused on rate design strategies for meeting regulatory objectives, will examine the pros, the cons, what’s worked, and what hasn’t.
Rick Starkweather, partner and regulatory practice leader at ScottMadden, will partner with Dan Hansen, vice president of Christensen Associates Energy Consulting, to chair the conference.
“We are pleased to be working with EUCI and Christensen Associates Energy Consulting again this year,” says Mr. Starkweather. “In particular, I am looking forward to the session on communicating price changes. Having worked with several utilities over the past year on their new rate filings, it has become evident that developing appropriate messaging about proposed tariff changes to customers and other stakeholders is critical.”
One of the sessions, “Commissioners’ Perspectives on Rate Design,” will allow each Commissioner to provide a brief regulatory overview on rate design issues in their respective states, particularly with respect to addressing emerging issues such as distributed generation, electric vehicles, dynamic pricing, and conservation. This session will also include a panel discussion on evolving regulatory concerns with energy policy initiatives. Panelists will include Jeremy Oden of Alabama Public Service Commission and Herbert Hilliard of Tennessee Regulatory Authority. Dr. Hansen will serve as moderator.
“I’m excited about the speakers we have lined up. Our mix of utility staff, regulators, and industry experts will provide great information about how utilities are dealing with the challenges presented by distributed generation, how they are communicating rate changes, and methods to deal with regulatory lag,” says Dr. Hansen.
