ScottMadden Shares Key Takeaways from the New York Energy Market Summit 2018

September 11, 2018

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading management consulting firms specializing in energy, recently joined industry leaders as a sponsor and presenter at the New York Energy Market Summit. This summit brought together industry experts and key decision makers from a few of the major utilities to share solutions and practices critical to achieving New York’s Clean Energy Standard. To access our key takeaways, please click here.

Chris Sturgill, manager at ScottMadden, was a keynote speaker during the pre-executive summit briefing. His presentation focused on the ongoing implementation of New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative and how it is benefitting or challenging distributed energy resource (DER) providers. “The New York Energy Market Summit is always an interesting discussion because it brings together divergent views of REV policies,” notes Mr. Sturgill. “The dialogue between utilities and third parties in New York is among the liveliest in the industry.”

Josh Kmiec, manager at ScottMadden, moderated the panel discussion, “Comparing Illinois and Massachusetts to New York – What’s Working and What Isn’t.” Panelists included Commissioner John Rosales from the Illinois Commerce Commission; Ted Kelly, assistant counsel in the New York State Department of Public Service; and Peter Mandelstam, executive director at Grid Alternatives Tri-State. Mr. Kmiec commented, “While some states, such as New York, California, and Hawaii, tend to receive a lot of fanfare when it comes to grid modernization and integration of DERs, it’s important to note what is happening in other parts of the United States as well. Massachusetts and Illinois are prime examples of places that have made real strides toward developing a modern and clean grid, and the lessons from successes there (and in other states) can serve as guides for grid modernization and DER integration efforts across the country.”

Kevin Hernandez, director at ScottMadden, moderated the panel discussion, “Scaling-Up – Taking NY REV Demos to the Next Level.” Demonstration projects are a critical aspect of REV and learnings from them continue to inform new policies in New York and beyond. Panelists included Pierre Bull, project manager at Center for Sustainable Energy; MD Sakib, section manager at Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc.; and Arunkumar Vedhathiri from National Grid.
