ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, recently joined industry leaders as a panel moderator at the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) Utility Conference in Tucson, AZ. This event included a valuable panel discussion focused on the energy markets in Australia.
In November 2016, ScottMadden and SEPA led a fact-finding mission to discover ways Australian utilities and partners were deploying distributed energy resources (DERs) and how customers were responding to the market shift.
During the Utility Conference, Chris Vlahoplus, partner and clean tech & sustainability practice leader at ScottMadden, moderated the panel, “Lessons from Australia – Insights from an Energy Revolution Down Under.” This session explored rooftop solar as a discretionary purchase, the influence of storage on the market, the importance of understanding and engaging the customer, and the importance of data integrity and its value. Panelists, comprised of executives who participated in the mission, included Steve Malnight, senior vice president of strategy and policy at Pacific Gas & Electric; Jim Pratt, senior director of grid modernization services at Salt River Project; and Seth Frader-Thompson, president at EnergyHub.
“The Australia experience provided some unique lessons for the U.S. utilities as we contemplate a market in which distributed resources are at scale,” said Mr. Vlahoplus.
