ScottMadden Partners with SEPA to Explore UK’s Turbulence and Innovation

October 11, 2018

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading management consulting firms specializing in energy, is excited to join the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) as executive sponsor for the 2018 United Kingdom Executive Fact-Finding Mission. Taking place October 14–19, this mission will explore powerful discoveries and course corrections of the UK’s most recent energy innovations, including performance-based energy price schemes, transactive energy projects, and flexibility markets.

The UK is moving to a decarbonized energy sector and isn’t shying away from experimentation to get there. Mission attendees will delve into these programs to hear about practical lessons and new approaches to growing challenges in the industry:

  • Impacts of the Revenue = Incentives + Innovation + Outputs (RIIO) pricing model on distribution system operators and consumers
  • System reliability and balance with the world’s largest offshore wind capacity
  • The role of electric vehicles in the UK and decarbonization goals
  • Distributed energy resource management systems and control solutions in use
  • How the transmission system operators took storage mainstream with their Enhanced Frequency Response tender

Cristin Lyons, partner and energy practice leader at ScottMadden, and John Pang, partner at ScottMadden, will join the mission as ScottMadden’s representatives. “The UK market provides some great lessons learned for the United States as we integrate various resources into the generation mix, both utility scale and distributed,” remarks Ms. Lyons.

“The United Kingdom’s move to decarbonizing its energy sector is undertaking several innovative experiments,” adds Julia Hamm, president and CEO of SEPA. “From an innovative, and controversial, performance-based energy price scheme to transactive energy projects and flexibility markets, participants will see what has worked and what hasn’t.”
