ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, recently joined industry leaders as a sponsor of NEI’s Industry Conference and Supplier Expo: Nuclear Energy Assembly. Sean Lawrie and Ed Baker, partners at ScottMadden, attended the event to further explore ongoing efforts to preserve nuclear power generation.
While renewable energy has experienced significant growth, in part due to focused policies that promote wind and solar, nuclear has faced a wave of actual and announced retirements. To understand the potential loss of carbon-free generation, ScottMadden compared “at-risk” nuclear assets facing early retirement to all wind and solar assets operating at the end of 2017. Our report shows that most of the gains from carbon-free renewable generation are at significant risk due to the loss or potential loss of carbon-free nuclear generation.
“It was impressive to see the industry’s unified effort to educate local communities and state government officials on the value of nuclear generation as the backbone of a reliable electricity grid and to a clean energy future. This is a meaningful step in the right direction—one that has resulted in a decline in nuclear power plant closures and “at-risk” nuclear assets facing early retirement,” explains Mr. Lawrie. “For if enough nuclear plants shut down, a tipping point may be reached for the entire industry in the United States, and we will lose forever that carbon-free generation.”
“It is encouraging that advocacy efforts are beginning to pay off and that individual states are beginning to recognize and value the environmental benefits of nuclear generation,” adds Mr. Baker.
Are you truly aware of the potential for “giving back” gains in carbon-free generation from solar and wind through the early retirement of nuclear capacity? Access our latest report to find out.
