ScottMadden to Examine the Transforming Electric Sector at the SEPA Grid Evolution Summit

July 12, 2017

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, will soon join industry leaders as a sponsor and presenter at the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) Grid Evolution Summit being held July 25–27 in Washington, DC. This event provides a unique platform for industry stakeholders to discuss electric evolution – how the electric sector will develop, modernize the grid, and better integrate distributed energy resources (DERs).

During the event, Chris Sturgill, senior associate at ScottMadden, will join panelists from CLEAResult and ICF International to discuss diversifying utility and industry revenue models. This session will begin the discussion of how to move forward as a player in the electricity industry. How are independent energy service companies eroding traditional utility revenues? How do utilities manage costs when revenues are flat or declining? Can utilities compete in non-regulated services to maintain revenues? Whether responding to mandates in a changing regulatory environment or working with non-regulated services and third parties, panelists will explore diverse case studies and begin a broader dialogue about dealing with imposed change.

“These are tough questions with no easy answers, but several states, like New York, California, and perhaps surprisingly Illinois, are laying the foundation to adapt utility operations and planning to increase DER penetration,” said Mr. Sturgill. “These states are pursuing very different paths to integrate DER and other diverse resources; each will provide important lessons for the industry,” added Cristin Lyons, partner and grid transformation practice leader at ScottMadden and Market Design track chair.
