ScottMadden to Discuss the Value of DERs: Can the New York Utilities Create an Effective Successor to the National Electricity Market?

September 18, 2018

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading management consulting firms specializing in energy, will soon join industry leaders as a sponsor and presenter at EUCI’s 16th Annual Rate Design Conference taking place October 4–5 in Minneapolis, MN. Themed “Rate Design Renaissance,” this conference will bring together perspectives around customer engagement, increased renewables, and alternative revenue streams in a way that best illustrates their possible interactions and positive impacts.

As the U.S. electricity system continues to go through tremendous change, increased pressures from solar, storage, electric vehicles, and home energy management systems are pushing utilities to explore new rate designs and pricing options. As a part of the Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) proceeding, the New York utilities recently submitted rate design proposals for customers with distributed energy resources (DERs). So, what’s ahead? During the event, Kevin Hernandez, director at ScottMadden, will describe the process, proposals, and next steps in New York.

“New York has in many ways taken the lead nationwide in defining the value that DERs provide to the grid and compensating DERs on a temporal and locational basis for that value,” explains Mr. Hernandez. “The development and evolution of the Value of DER proceeding in New York provides an opportunity for utilities across the country to learn what has worked well and in what areas they might tailor their own efforts to align the value of DERs with other policy goals.”

Rick Starkweather, partner at ScottMadden, joins Dan Hansen, vice president of Christensen Associates Energy Consulting, to again co-chair the event this year adds, “We have assembled a terrific slate of speakers for this conference with additional case studies from Arizona Public Service, Entergy, Eversource, Gulf Power, Minnesota Power, and Salt River Project.”
