ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, recently contributed an article to the Natural Gas & Electricity Magazine’s April 2015 issue. Originally featured in an ACORE member-authored publication, the article, “Renewable Energy Will Force Change in Utilities,” explores key issues and provides recommendations related to evolving utility business models through the integration of renewable energy.
While utility-scale renewable strategies can be similar to traditional utility-scale generation, the utility business model may face significant changes from customer-sited distributed resources, especially distributed solar photovoltaics. The analysis provides an overview of current utilities’ responses and a course of action for the future.
The article notes that despite some rhetoric to the contrary, utilities will continue to exist and play a vital role in providing valuable services to customers. Therefore, utilities must have room to become valuable partners to ensure that distributed generation becomes a long-term, positive enhancement of the electric grid.
“ScottMadden has seen strong interest in understanding the impact and opportunities associated with distributed resources. This is a timely examination of the critical issues facing the industry,” says Chris Vlahoplus, partner and clean tech & sustainability practice leader at ScottMadden.
