The United States has worked to combat climate change by focusing on lowering the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the electric generation sector. One key strategy has been to invest in the growth of renewables, principally solar and wind. This strategy, underpinned by tax incentives, has helped wind and solar grow from 1.3% in 2008 to 8.8% in 2018 of the electricity produced in the United States. Adding that to existing hydro and nuclear (both GHG emission free), the United States now gets 35.2% of its generation from clean sources (chart 1). That is the good news.
On December 13, 2018, the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) issued an Order[1] setting energy storage targets for New York state and establishing policies to drive energy storage development. The Order enacted many of the recommendations from the New York State Energy Storage Roadmap,[2] published in June 2018 by the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) and New York State Energy Research and

The United States hit an electric vehicle milestone late last year. In October 2018, we crossed the threshold of one million plug-in electric vehicles sold. Electric vehicle sales are forecasted to expand even faster as new models become available to consumers. You would think that this means only positive environmental and economic outcomes.
Is your organization ready to implement a leading practices shared services delivery model? When organizations effectively implement a shared services delivery model, they can benefit from improved customer experience, better cost control, heightened scalability and integration, and improved transparency across enterprise data. In order to achieve these results, outlining a clear vision, maintaining support from stakeholders, forming an effective implementation team, calculating the benefits, and ensuring an effective framework for change are necessary elements for success. We have identified five key steps to ensure the successful transformation to a leading practices shared services delivery model.
There is significant pressure on organizations to be financially nimble, lead the people and cultural aspects of the organization, standardize and globalize operations, consumerize service experiences, and cut costs. While meeting these new challenges, corporate functions providing internal service are also being required to be more business-oriented. Terms like “strategic,” “business partner,” “scalable,” and “value-added services” are frequently used to describe the ideal functional organization.
Has your shared services organization continued to advance in terms of customer service and services offered? If not, it may be time to consider an upgrade. In order to continue to bring value to the business and keep costs down, shared services organizations must innovate, and ScottMadden can help.
There are a handful of states that can be counted on to lead change in our nation’s electric industry. For anyone interested in the progress of grid modernization, Illinois is certainly a place to look. Through a series of forward-thinking legislative pieces beginning with the Electric Customer Choice and Rate Relief Law in 1997, Illinois has positioned itself at the forefront of advancements in the industry.
In April 2018, ScottMadden published, “While You Were Sleeping: The Unnoticed Loss of Carbon-free Generation in the United States.” In that paper, we highlighted how the climate progress made by the addition of new carbon-free electric generation from solar and wind was in danger of being largely “given back” due to the potential loss of existing carbon-free nuclear generation. Our analysis showed

A security operating model enables an organization to focus on identifying risks, recommending risk responses, facilitating tradeoff decisions related to these risks, and providing a line of sight to the execution of these responses. The core of this model is a collaborative continuous improvement process designed to sustain the controls that secure the enterprise. You can learn more about the advantages of a security operating model in “The Security Operating Model: A Strategic Approach for Building a More Secure Organization.”
The wave of automation is taking root in talent acquisition. Talent acquisition is reaping the benefits of intelligent automation (IA) and using it to transform sourcing, recruiting, and onboarding processes. This article will introduce the concept of cognitive recruiting and cover the benefits and considerations of implementing these capabilities within your talent acquisition organization.
As companies begin the journey into Intelligent Automation (IA), they often start with a Robotics Process Automation (RPA) pilot. An RPA pilot provides a test case for automation of a process and is governed more easily than an enterprise-wide program. As a pilot, the limited processes (often one process) have little impact on the entire company, and longer-term operational decisions about RPA do not have to be resolved. However, as RPA implementations expand within your organization, you will need to answer more complex governance questions regarding workforce management, vendor selection, infrastructure, robot maintenance, RPA orchestration across departments, and robot development standards. An enterprise-wide RPA governance model will eventually be required to efficiently manage numerous robots performing tasks that touch multiple business units, functions, and/or internal/external customers.
