Bruce Power’s industry-leading emergency response program was developed with the support of ScottMadden and RTI International
In the November 2015 edition of Nuclear Engineering International Magazine, the article “Network Improvements” highlights the Bruce Power nuclear site in Ontario, Canada and the operational performance assessment of their new gamma monitoring system. This innovative system was installed following the Fukushima accident. This article is based on the case study “How to Implement a World-Class Emergency Response Program” and shares the details of Bruce Power’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, joined forces with RTI International, one of the world’s leading research institutes, to help Bruce Power design and implement the nuclear industry’s leading emergency response program. Bruce Power, the world’s largest operating nuclear facility, requested the help of ScottMadden and RTI with their project. The goal of the project was to devise and deploy a strategy that would improve emergency response communications, bolster radiological-monitoring systems, and allow Bruce Power to take a leadership position within the industry in the post-Fukushima era.
The team conducted a gap assessment, designed and deployed a state-of-the-art remote radiological-monitoring system, and customized a centralized, analytical software tool that will enable all responders to access a “single version of the truth” in the event of an emergency. These new tools and associated processes significantly reduce the risk of radiation exposure for first responders in the field and diminish the potential for erroneous or conflicting data that could hamper response efforts in a rapidly evolving situation.
“The Bruce Power emergency preparedness and emergency response programs continue to be recognized as the industry leader in a post-Fukushima era,” said Sean Lawrie, partner at ScottMadden. “The solution was a cost-effective way to improve radiological monitoring and response capabilities while enhancing collaboration and communication between the utilities and government agencies.”
