ScottMadden Discusses the Future of the Grid at the NY REV Summit

August 19, 2015

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, recently sponsored and presented at Infocast’s NY Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) Summit. This event provided a unique opportunity to hear the latest updates on the REV initiative, its impact on the energy industry in New York, and the future of utilities throughout the United States. Attendees included regulators from New York, Hawaii, and California, the major utilities serving New York as well as interested utilities from other states, industry, environmental, and community groups, among others.

NY REV is an ambitious and wide-reaching regulatory initiative that aims to reorient both the electric industry and the ratemaking paradigm toward a consumer-centered approach that harnesses technology and markets. Distributed energy resources will be integrated into the planning and operation of electric distribution systems to achieve optimal system efficiencies, secure universal, affordable service, and enable the development of a resilient, climate-friendly energy system.

Cristin Lyons, partner and transmission, distribution, and Smart Grid practice leader at ScottMadden, served as moderator for two panel discussions focused on creating a robust, flexible, and efficient “grid of the future.” The session, “Dynamic Grid of the Future,” examined the flexibility required by the grid, current and emerging technologies and their value in providing increased granularity to customer data, the need for transparency in front of and behind the meter, and the most efficient paths for investment and planning for the grid of the future. The session, “Role of Energy Storage in the NY Market,” discussed the drop in the cost of batteries over the past three years and the success of mandates in various states for energy storage (i.e., the RPS carve out in California). A consistent and predictable tariff and rate structure was deemed critical. The role the utility could play in storage ownership and the control of certain assets behind the meter were also discussed.

“REV is introducing entirely new players and opportunities to the electric utility industry. The New York experience will inform the rest of the country of what may be possible through collaboration amongst diverse stakeholders,” said Ms. Lyons.
