ScottMadden and RTI Assist Bruce Power with the Industry’s Leading Emergency Response Program

October 8, 2014

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, recently joined forces with RTI International, one of the world’s leading research institutes, to implement the nuclear industry’s leading emergency response program. Bruce Power, the world’s largest-operating nuclear facility, requested the help of ScottMadden and RTI to devise and deploy a strategy that would improve emergency response communications and bolster their radiological-monitoring systems.

ScottMadden and RTI helped formulate and execute a strategy that would allow Bruce Power to take a leadership position within the industry in the post-Fukushima era. The team conducted a gap assessment, designed and deployed a state-of-the-art remote radiological-monitoring system, and customized a centralized, analytical software tool that enabled all responders to access a “single version of the truth” in the event of an emergency. These new tools and associated processes significantly reduce the risk of radiation exposure for first responders in the field and diminish the potential for erroneous or conflicting data that could hamper response efforts in a rapidly evolving situation.

“This new analytical dashboard doesn’t just aid Bruce Power in an emergency,” said Frank Saunders, vice president, Nuclear Oversight and Regulatory Affairs at Bruce Power. “We are making it available to several key agencies in Ontario. So we all have access to the same information and can communicate effectively to protect the public during an emergency.”

“This new system puts our emergency management center team in the driver’s seat,” said Dan McArthur, manager, Emergency Management at Bruce Power. “Our employees will have all the information they need at their fingertips to make informed decisions that will keep our community and our workers safe.”

“Bruce Power’s emergency response program will become the model for the industry and incorporates the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi event,” says Sean Lawrie, partner at ScottMadden.
