ScottMadden to Discuss Transmission Challenges and Opportunities at Infocast’s Transmission Summit

February 6, 2017

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, will join industry leaders as a sponsor and presenter at Infocast’s 20th Annual Transmission Summit being held March 6–8 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. This three-day program features two distinct events: the Transmission Executive Forum on March 6 will address impacts of the shift to distributed resources on transmission planning and operations, while the Transmission Summit scheduled for March 7–8 will discuss the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the electric transmission industry.

During the Transmission Executive Forum, Cristin Lyons, partner and grid transformation practice leader at ScottMadden, will serve as the moderator for the session, “Modeling and Planning Issues with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).” Panelists Mike DeSocio of NYISO and Courtney McCormick of PSE&G will explore how DERs are shaping the transmission planner’s job. In particular, the panel will seek to address current modeling and analytic tools for the distributed energy grid, responses from planners in regions with high levels of rooftop solar and other DERs, the potential for stranded transmission investments, and the effects of two-way flows on distribution feeders and their impacts on transmission.

“As DERs continue to proliferate on the grid, their impacts to the transmission system will grow. Markets across the country are grappling with how best to integrate these resources both in planning and operations,” said Ms. Lyons.

During the Transmission Summit, Stephen Haubrich, director at ScottMadden, will facilitate the session, “A Shift in Energy Policy? What We Can Expect Post-Election.” This panel will review how the election results will affect the energy industry as a whole and the implications for transmission. Panelists will include Bruce Edelston of Southern Company, Joseph Kelliher of NextEra Energy, and Antonio Smyth of Transource Energy.

“We have already seen numerous energy policy shifts in the first few days of the new administration and expect additional changes in the coming months. The panelists for this session are well positioned to provide valuable insights on the impacts of these recent changes and the ones likely coming in the near term,” said Mr. Haubrich.
