ScottMadden Reviews Status of Coal Generation: It’s Not Dead Yet

May 12, 2016

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, recently joined industry leaders as a sponsor and presenter at Infocast’s 19th Annual Transmission Summit. During the Transmission Summit, Todd Williams, partner and fossil practice co-leader at ScottMadden, reviewed the generation landscape and the impacts of the Clean Power Plan (CPP).

As quoted in the recent RTO Insider newsletter, Todd Williams says, “Despite the CPP and competition from wind and cheap gas, some coal generation will be around for decades. The average lifespan of a coal plant is 55 years and the newest one was built a year ago. We’re going to have coal in the portfolio through at least 2070, if not beyond. Coal’s not going away completely. This reminds me of the Monty Python skit ‘Not Dead Yet.’”

“What we are seeing is a shift in the generation stack, while we are decreasing the use of coal to produce electricity, we are increasing the use of renewables and natural gas. Barring additional regulatory limitations, we will continue to have coal as an option, just not at historical levels,” added Mr. Williams.
